Bobtail and nontrucking liability are not always the same

People commonly use the terms interchangeably. The actual policy language, your lease and what you were doing when a loss occurred determine whether coverage applies.

Bobtail

Commonly describes liability exposure while operating a tractor without a trailer. Whether it applies during business use depends on the policy form; the name alone does not define the coverage.

Nontrucking Liability

Generally addresses specified personal use by an owner operator leased to a motor carrier. It is not a substitute for the motor carrier's primary liability while operating in the carrier's business.

Use the contract, not a guess. Send the insurance section of your lease or the certificate requirements. Pinnacle can review what the carrier is asking you to provide and quote available options accordingly.
Coverage that may accompany it

Build the owner operator package around the actual exposure

Availability varies by market, lease and risk details.

Physical Damage

Comprehensive and collision coverage for the scheduled tractor, subject to value, deductible and policy terms.

Occupational Accident

May be considered for eligible independent contractors where available. It is not workers' compensation and the benefits differ.

Certificates

After binding, certificates can reflect coverage supported by the policy. Additional wording or status may require carrier approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bobtail and nontrucking liability?

Bobtail commonly refers to driving the tractor without a trailer. NTL generally refers to certain personal use. The terms and forms vary, so review the policy and lease.

How much is bobtail insurance in Georgia?

Pricing depends on the driver, tractor, lease, limits, garaging, operating history and requested coverage. A submission is needed for an accurate quote.

How fast can I receive a certificate?

A certificate can be issued after coverage is bound and only to reflect coverage supported by the policy. Endorsements may take additional processing.

Do I need bobtail coverage if I am leased on?

Your motor carrier lease usually states what you must carry. Send the requirement so it can be matched to the correct coverage.

Does NTL cover personal trips?

It may cover certain personal use, subject to the policy wording and exclusions. It does not automatically apply to every trip outside dispatch.

Can physical damage be added?

Depending on the market, physical damage and other owner operator coverages may be offered with or separately from liability protection.
